{"id":494,"date":"2018-09-26T16:41:58","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T21:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hutchison-management.com\/?p=494"},"modified":"2018-09-26T16:41:58","modified_gmt":"2018-09-26T21:41:58","slug":"responding-to-don-tapscotts-call-for-a-new-social-contract-we-all-have-to-build-for-the-digital-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hutchison-canada.com\/?p=494","title":{"rendered":"Responding to Don Tapscott&#8217;s call for a \u201cnew social contract we all have to build for the digital era\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On Monday September 24th, Don Tapscott <a title=\"Don Tapscott on The Walrus Talks Connections\" href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/connections-don-tapscott\/\" target=\"new\">delivered some important and prescient remarks to <em>The Walrus<\/em> Talks Connections.<\/a> He spoke of the need for a <em>\u201cnew social contract we all have to build for the digital era\u201d.<\/em> A few days earlier this month the <a title=\"World Economic Forum - Agile Cities: Preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/whitepapers\/agile-cities-preparing-for-the-fourth-industrial-revolution\" target=\"new\">World Economic Forum (WEF) issued a report titled &#8220;Agile Cities: Preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.&#8221;<\/a> There is an interesting dichotomy between these two public presentations, mirroring what\u2019s going on in general around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Don Tapscott on The Walrus Talks Connections\" href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/connections-don-tapscott\/\" target=\"new\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hutchison-canada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tapscott-walrus-talks.jpg\" alt=\"tapscott-walrus-talks\" width=\"425\" height=\"285\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hutchison-canada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tapscott-walrus-talks.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.hutchison-canada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/tapscott-walrus-talks-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Don is one of the world\u2019s leading observers, thinkers and writers chronicling and participating in the world\u2019s ongoing digital revolution. He is focused on the issues of trust and democracy in our societies, arguing that the present evolution of our new digital society with its uneven distribution of wealth and knowledge has elements similar to feudal days. Don argues we need to come together nationally to create a new digital democracy and replace the faltering one we created for the industrial age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meanwhile, the WEF report referencing the Fourth Industrial Revolution and introducing \u201cAgile Cities\u201d, provides another descriptor to compete with and perhaps complement \u201cSmart, Intelligent Resilient, Sustainable, Investable, Innovative\u201d and many others. They are all part of today\u2019s urban digital transformation which is attracting billions of investment dollars and began around the time when I and other colleagues pioneered the creation of Smart Toronto \u201994, twenty-four years ago.
